Wake-On-LAN, WOL, with Apple iPhone Remote

With Apple Remote for iPhone and iPod Touch you control iTunes on a remote computer.

What I only recently found out is that Apple Remote acts as a Wake-On-LAN (WOL) client. At least it does that in my environment. My Mac Mini wakes up from sleep when I start Apple Remote on the iPod Touch and have it try to connect to iTunes on the Mac Mini.

I find this a little odd because none of the articles I found (App Store and apple.com) mention this feature. Of course I’m happy about it nonetheless.

  1. I noticed the same. But I wouldn’t call it wake on lan. In my world, wake on lan, is actually turning on the mac, when it is shut down.

  2. Well, as much as I honor “your world” the term WOL is appropriate here. From Wikipedia: “Wake on LAN (WOL, sometimes WoL) is an Ethernet computer networking standard that allows a computer to be turned on or woken up remotely by a network message.”

  3. WoL is “wake”, not power-on. I agree w/ frightanic’s words, but not his results. Doesn’t work w/ my iPod Touch 2G. Too bad. Looks like I’ll have to pay $3 for iWOL…

  4. I noticed the same thing on mine (confirming). Used to use iWOL, but now I’m thrilled. Now if only they had a way to put it back to sleep after use (maybe it’s time to just set a timer). @Jim – double check your WOL settings with another PC on your network if possible to determine if it’s your PC’s settings or the remote app itself – mine wakes from both an iPhone and iPod Touch. Good luck!

  5. I can also confirm Apple Remote doing WOL. Very nice indeed:-) i use it to power up and control my lowpower Via epia windows xp platform. I can start when it I have used turn off from the start menu so it is not hibernating or in sleep mode.

You can use any of the vnc client apps for the iphone to shutdown the pc / mac remotely but a one button one click solution would truly be nice for this part.

  6. I noticed this as well today. I presume it gets the MAC address from the iTunes library of every PC it connects to. RemoteBoot is another free WoL app.

There are also several apps with customisable buttons for shutdown and other functions. Snatch is one, I think. Haven’t actually tried it though.

  7. I too can confirm that the apple remote has a full power on WOL feature. Wierd as hell when i launched the app and heard my pc beep. Again this was from a full shutdown state. Looks like when the remote sniffs for the pc it drops the magic packet which triggers the startup
